You can now watch the replay of the virtual parallel event (April 27, 2023) titled “Climate change and indigenous women and girls: Addressing intersectional discrimination and structured inequalities” on YouTube.
The webinar focused on the gender impact of climate change on indigenous women and relevant structured inequalities and discrimination they encounter. The panelists and participants highlighted the direct consequences and manifestations of climate change on indigenous women and girls identifying the existing barriers, challenges and viable potential solutions to address intersectional discrimination and structured inequalities against indigenous women and girls. The panelists also shared good practices in integrating a gender-responsive and non-discriminatory approach upholding the human rights of indigenous women and girls while taking action on climate change.
All those who participated and attended the webinar had the opportunity to hear, learn, and be inspired by experiences and knowledge shared by our distinguished speakers. Michaela Waite, our IPA intern, did a wonderful job in her role as the moderator of this discussion.
Indigenous women and girls are essential keepers of traditional knowledge & values, they are environmental activists and human rights defenders, but above all they are powerful forces for change! We need to always listen to their voices & learn from their wisdom during the UN Permanent Forum and beyond that.
A special thanks goes to Sr. Libania Fernandes, IPA Justice Contact from North India, who agreed to participate as a speaker in this panel discussion but also to Sr. Lucy Sebastian from Zambia who sent over video clips and testimonies from indigenous women and girls contextualising the reality in their local communities. I am grateful to both of them for their kindness, support and commitment to this event.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of you who attended this event! For those of you who were unable to join us, you can find the video recording here: https://youtu.be/qxXQ-uvPJI8
Feel free to share it throughout your networks!
Respectfully,
