CEDAW/C/86/1, 9-27 October 2023

Women holding a banner

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is convening from 9-27 October 2023. It is an independent body of experts which monitors how the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is being implemented in different countries. It currently consists of 23 experts from all around the world who focus on women’s rights.

The Philippines, a country in which the Presentation Sisters are present, is one of the countries providing an official State report to CEDAW 86.

There is also a CEDAW treaty, which is designed to help women around the globe to improve their daily lives. It has been used to oppose different kinds of discrimination, including violence and lack of legal protection and also to alleviate poverty which is caused by discrimination, such as property rights for women, inheritance and access to credit.

The UN reports that only four of the 193 UN Member States have not yet ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Of the 189 who have ratified the Convention, 114 have ratified the Optional Protocol, which provides additional protections.
